Mount Gurugu

Mount Gurugu rises west of Nador and gives the best overview of the whole setting: lagoon, city, Mediterranean, and the Spanish border at Melilla. On a clear day it makes sense of the geography in a way the flat streets of Nador never quite do.

The mountain is rural, scattered with villages and rough tracks, so go with a local driver or guide rather than assuming it is a simple urban hike. The views are the draw, but the mountain also shows the harder edge of this border region.

A story
Mount Gurugu has long been more than a viewpoint. Its height gave it strategic value during the Rif War, and in recent decades its wooded slopes have also become associated with migrants waiting for a chance to cross into nearby Melilla.
