Hiking in the Atlas

Ouirgane is one of the best bases in the High Atlas for day walks that do not require a guide or serious mountaineering experience. The valley opens onto a network of paths leading to Berber villages, walnut groves, and progressively higher ground with views back across the reservoir.

The Azzadene Valley walk is one of the most popular routes: it climbs steadily from Ouirgane into the hills above the lake, passing through two or three small settlements before reaching open rocky terrain with big mountain views. A full day's effort brings you to the Tizi Oussem pass at around 1,900 metres, where the Toubkal massif — Morocco's highest peaks — fills the horizon. The trail connects to the Imlil route, so fit walkers can arrange a traverse.

Guided day hikes are available through the hotels and riads in the village. Horses and mules can be hired for those who prefer to ride. The valley is also a good base for mountain biking, with tracks running to several neighbouring villages on reasonable gradients.

A story
The trails around Ouirgane pass through a landscape that has barely changed in centuries. The terraced fields, mule tracks, and flat-roofed Berber villages built from the same reddish stone as the mountains themselves could be from any era. The Tizi Oussem pass at 1,900 metres, reachable in a full day's walk from the valley, is the classic viewpoint over the Toubkal massif.
