The Church-Turned-Mosque

One of the more striking monuments in Sidi Ifni is the former Spanish church, now serving as a mosque. The conversion is visible in the architecture: the nave, the round-arched windows, and the bell tower — now a minaret — all declare a Spanish Catholic origin that the building's current purpose does not attempt to disguise. The juxtaposition is honest and interesting rather than incongruous.

The building is active and not open to non-Muslim visitors inside, but the exterior is in good condition and worth examining from the street. The bell tower-minaret is particularly fine — the Spanish ecclesiastical design and the Moroccan Islamic function coexist in a single structure without apparent strain. It is one of the clearer physical reminders that this town changed hands in living memory.
