Erg Chegaga

Morocco's wilder, less-visited great sand-dune sea

Sixty kilometres west of M'Hamid lies Erg Chegaga, one of the two great sand-dune seas in southern Morocco and the less-visited of the pair. The dunes rise to more than 300 metres and stretch for 40 kilometres. Access is either by 4×4 (2–4 hours from M'Hamid) or by camel caravan over three days each way. Several permanent Berber camps sit on the eastern edge, where you can spend the night in tents under a sky full of stars. Nearby is Oasis Sacre, a spring-fed oasis worth the short detour.
