Tinfou Dunes

A small isolated dune field 25km south of Zagora — the easy taste of the Sahara

These are the closest dunes to Zagora — a small, isolated patch of sand rising abruptly out of the hammada plain about 25 kilometres south of town, just past Tamegroute. They cannot compete with Erg Chigaga or Erg Chebbi for sheer scale, but you can be there in forty minutes by grand taxi rather than a punishing 4×4 day trip. Climb the highest dune at sunset and the silence is the same as in the deep desert.

The Auberge Repos du Sable at the base has been the Zagora-side institution for decades; you can stop for mint tea, ride a camel for half an hour, or sleep in a Berber tent at the foot of the sand. For travellers short on time who still want to say they have been in the Sahara, this is the practical compromise.
