Game drives on the Rift Valley floodplain are the classic Gorongosa experience. Expect waterbuck, oribi, warthog, baboons, crocodiles, and big birdlife as the baseline; elephant, buffalo, lion, and hyena are possible with time and luck.
The rhythm is familiar but the mood is not. Gorongosa feels like a park still becoming itself again, and guides often talk as much about recovery, research, and community work as they do about sightings. Early morning and late afternoon are best.
