Lion House

The Lion House is an abandoned safari building inside Gorongosa that became one of the park's oddest landmarks. Its fame comes from the image of lions using the ruined structure as shade and lookout, turning a failed human project into an accidental wildlife hide.

Access depends on road conditions and park rules, so treat it as a possible stop rather than a guaranteed attraction. If your guide includes it, the appeal is less the building itself than the story it tells about how quickly the bush takes back what people abandon.

A story
The abandoned lodge became famous after lions were photographed lounging in its empty rooms and on its roof. It is a neat symbol of Gorongosa's strange 20th-century history: tourism disappeared, people left, and wildlife quietly reclaimed the stage.
