Mount Gorongosa

Mount Gorongosa rises northwest of the floodplain and changes the whole park. Its higher, wetter slopes support forest, coffee-growing communities, and streams that feed the lowland ecosystem.

Visits to the mountain are more community and landscape focused than classic safari. If available, a guided excursion gives a valuable counterpoint to the floodplain: cooler air, cultivated slopes, forest patches, and a clearer sense of how people and park boundaries meet.

A story
The mountain is the park's water tower. Rain falling on its slopes feeds streams that run down to the Rift Valley, so forest protection on Mount Gorongosa directly affects the wetlands and wildlife far below.
