Fort São João

Star-shaped Portuguese fort with sweeping channel views

The most substantial of Ibo's three Portuguese forts, Fort São João sits at the northern tip of the island and commands sweeping views over the Quirimbas channels. The star-shaped walls are largely intact and you can walk the ramparts. Local guides can be hired at the gate and are worth the fee — the stories they tell fill the ruins with life.

A story
Fort São João was completed in 1791, making it one of the largest Portuguese fortifications on the East African coast. During the 19th century it served as a prison — shackles and cells are still visible — and later as a customs post. At its height, Ibo was one of the busiest slave-trading ports on the coast; the fort's dungeons held captives before their shipment across the Indian Ocean.
