Costa do Sol District

The bayfront strip north-east of the centre, lined with seafood restaurants and weekend life

The Costa do Sol district takes its name from the famous 1933 seafront restaurant of the same name and stretches along the bay from the eastern end of the Avenida Marginal toward the salt pans and the airport. It is a casual, slightly faded neighbourhood of low villas, restaurants, fishing boats and a long curve of beach.

The district is at its best on weekend afternoons, when families come down for a long late lunch of grilled prawns and chilled white wine. The Mercado do Peixe fish market is the practical heart of the strip. By weekday it is quiet; by weekend night it picks up again with live music in several of the bars. Take a taxi out and a taxi back.
