Sommerschield is the wealthy residential quarter north-east of Polana, bordered by Avenida Julius Nyerere and Avenida Mártires da Mueda. The streets are quiet, the houses large and mostly walled, and the area concentrates a high proportion of the city's embassies, ambassadorial residences and big private homes. It is the safest part of the city for unaccompanied evening walking.
Sommerschield has the largest concentration of upmarket restaurants and bars in the city — Indian, Italian, Japanese, contemporary Mozambican — many of them in converted villas with gardens. The Sommerschield shopping centres are useful for supermarket runs and basic shopping. There is little of conventional tourist interest, but it is a pleasant area to base oneself in.
