Getting There

Pemba is served by its own airport, Pemba Airport (POL), with regular domestic flights from Maputo and Nampula on LAM Mozambique Airlines and other carriers. The flight from Maputo takes around two hours and is by far the most practical option given the distances involved. Some regional connections link Pemba with Dar es Salaam in Tanzania, making it possible to combine northern Mozambique with a visit to Tanzania or Zanzibar.

Overland travel is possible but demanding. The road north from Nampula through Montepuez is mostly unpaved in stretches and can be impassable after heavy rains. Chapas (shared minibuses) run the route but the journey takes many hours. Unless you have a robust vehicle and plenty of time, flying is strongly recommended.
