Praia de Xai-Xai

Praia de Xai-Xai is a long sandy beach about 10 km east of Xai-Xai town, protected by a coral reef that runs roughly a kilometre offshore. The reef creates a calm lagoon between beach and reef, making the swimming safe and pleasant — significantly calmer than the open ocean beaches further north. The water is warm and the sand is clean.

The beach is primarily a local and South African weekend destination — Xai-Xai is less than 300 km from the South African border and within easy driving distance of Johannesburg. It has a friendly, unhurried atmosphere, with a scattering of chalets, bungalows, and a campsite mostly used by self-drive visitors. The snorkelling in the reef area is modest but viable; there are no dive operators here, but the reef can be explored with a mask and fins. Fishing from the beach is popular with locals.

A story
In February 2000, Cyclone Eline struck Mozambique and caused catastrophic flooding of the Limpopo River. Floodwaters reached Praia de Xai-Xai and the famous image of a woman giving birth in a tree above the floodwaters — rescued by a South African Air Force helicopter — was taken here. The baby, born in the tree, was named Rositha.
