Xai-Xai

Limpopo River town near Praia de Xai-Xai, where an offshore reef shelters a calm coastal lagoon

Xai-Xai is the capital of Gaza province, situated on the Limpopo River about 220 km north of Maputo. The town itself is a sprawling settlement of markets, shops, and fuel stations — useful for a stop but not a destination in itself.

The real reason to come here is Praia de Xai-Xai, about 10 km east of town. A coral reef runs roughly a kilometre offshore, creating a protected lagoon with calm water good for swimming and snorkelling. The beach is a weekend favourite for Mozambican families and Maputo residents, and has a handful of hotels, chalets, and campsite options.

The Limpopo River estuary near town is worth a look for birdwatching and the mangrove landscape — occasional hippos are still seen in the quieter stretches. It's an easy and underrated first stop heading north from the South African border — close enough to Maputo to reach in an afternoon, far enough to feel like you've actually arrived.

Getting There

Xai-Xai is 220 km north of Maputo on the EN1, the main national highway that runs the length of Mozambique. The drive from Maputo takes around 2.5 to 3 hours in a private car, longer by bus.

By bus: Chapa (minibus) and coach services run between Maputo and Xai-Xai regularly throughout the day. The journey takes 3–4 hours depending on stops and traffic at the Limpopo bridge. Buses depart from Maputo's Junta bus terminal; ask at the terminal for the next departure. Several coach companies also run the route with more comfortable vehicles.

By car: The EN1 from Maputo to Xai-Xai is sealed and in reasonable condition. The turn-off to Praia de Xai-Xai is well-signed, 10 km before the town. Self-driving visitors from South Africa should note that the border crossing at Ressano Garcia (Komatipoort) is the most convenient, then the N4/EN1 runs north through Maputo.

From the border: Xai-Xai is a logical first overnight stop for travellers entering Mozambique from South Africa. It's about 3 hours from the Ressano Garcia/Komatipoort border crossing.

Things to Do

The main reason to come to Xai-Xai is the beach. Praia de Xai-Xai has a coral reef that creates a protected lagoon — one of the better swimming spots on the Mozambican coast south of Tofo. The town itself is a transit hub and administrative centre; the beach is 10 km away and that's where you'll want to spend your time.
