Getting Around

Self-Drive

Namibia is one of Africa's great self-drive destinations. The roads are mostly good, the traffic is minimal, and the distances between major attractions are enormous — which is part of the point. A standard 2WD car with good ground clearance is sufficient for most main routes including Windhoek to Sossusvlei, Etosha, and Swakopmund. A 4x4 is needed if you plan to venture into Damaraland, the Kaokoveld, the Skeleton Coast, or anywhere off the main gravel roads.

All the major international car hire companies operate from Windhoek airport and the city center. Specialist operators like Britz, Bushlore, and Namibia Car Hire can provide fully equipped 4x4 camping setups with roof tents, fridges, and GPS — the best way to see the remote areas.

Drive on the left. Gravel roads are comfortable at 80km/h; faster and you risk losing control or shredding tyres. Keep several spare tyres (two if going remote). Never drive at night outside urban areas — livestock and wildlife on the road are a serious hazard.

Distances are vast. Windhoek to Sossusvlei is about 330km; Windhoek to Etosha is about 430km. Plan for full driving days and budget for fuel — petrol stations are few and far between in remote areas. Fill up whenever you can.

Domestic Flights

Air Namibia is defunct (it ceased operations in 2021). FlyNamibia and Airlink now serve domestic routes. Charter flights are the main way to access remote lodges in the Skeleton Coast and Kaokoveld — most fly-in safari packages include these.

Domestic flights connect Windhoek (Eros Airport) with Swakopmund/Walvis Bay, Katima Mulilo (Caprivi), and airstrips near the main parks.

Buses and Shared Taxis

Intercape runs long-distance coaches between Windhoek and South African cities. Within Namibia, minibus shared taxis connect the larger towns on a fill-and-go basis — affordable but slow and not practical for national parks or rural areas.

Guided Tours

For travellers who don't want to self-drive, joining a guided overland tour is the most practical option. Many operators run 7-14 day circuits covering the main highlights. Guided mobile camping safaris are popular for Etosha and the northwest.

In Windhoek

Windhoek city center is small enough to walk. Taxis are available but not metered — agree a price before getting in. Ride-hailing apps are available but not always reliable. Car hire is easily arranged in the city center or at Hosea Kutako Airport.
