Oshikoto Lake

Perfectly circular sinkhole lake where WWI Germans dumped their guns

A circular dolomite sinkhole lake about 24km south of Tsumeb on the B1, Oshikoto is visually striking — a perfectly round pool in the flat bush, fed entirely by underground springs. During World War I, retreating German colonial forces dumped artillery pieces and ammunition into the lake to prevent them falling into South African hands; several have since been recovered and are now in the Tsumeb Museum. Worth a 20-minute stop if you're passing through.
