Camel Market

The camel market on the northern edge of Agadez is a genuine working trade market where livestock, salt, and goods from across the southern Sahara change hands. Tuareg and Fulani traders bring animals from as far as the Air Mountains and the Tenere, and the transactions are conducted in Hausa, Tamashek, and occasionally French. The market is most active in the early morning; by 11am the heat drives most business to a close.

This is not a tourist attraction. Dress modestly, move quietly, and ask before taking photographs of people. A guide from the old city who knows the traders will make the visit considerably richer — he can explain what's being traded, what prices are reasonable, and introduce you to the vendors. Camels are sold for working use and for meat; an adult male in good condition might sell for the equivalent of several hundred euros.
