Baleyara's weekly market, held on Thursdays, is the economic engine of the town and the primary reason most travellers passing through stop here. The market draws livestock traders, grain sellers, and craftspeople from the surrounding Sahel — herders arrive with cattle, goats, and the occasional camel; farmers bring millet, sorghum, and groundnuts; traders set up stalls with cloth, hardware, and household goods.
The livestock section is the most spectacular: a swirling crowd of animals and handlers where transactions happen by whispered price negotiation and a handshake. The tea stalls around the perimeter are good places to watch the market without being in its centre, and to talk with traders resting between transactions.
The market starts early in the morning and winds down by mid-afternoon. Thursday night, the town fills with traders who have come too far to return the same day, giving the otherwise quiet streets an uncharacteristic bustle.
