Day Trips

Abuja's surroundings are dominated by the dramatic granite landscape of the Federal Capital Territory, and the standout excursion is Zuma Rock, the 725-metre monolith that rises abruptly from the savannah about 80 kilometres north on the main highway to Kaduna. It features on Nigeria's hundred-naira note, and its sheer southern face carries a natural shadow pattern that locals call "the face of God." The drive takes around 90 minutes, and you can stop at the roadside village beneath it for photographs — it makes a natural half-day trip on its own or a worthwhile pause if you're already heading north toward Kaduna.
