National Christian Centre

The country's non-denominational national church, a striking modern building in the Central District

The National Christian Centre occupies a prominent site in the Central Business District of Abuja, not far from Eagle Square. A non-denominational church intended to serve the whole of Nigeria's Christian community, it was built as a national institution alongside the National Mosque — the two together were a deliberate statement about Nigeria's identity as a multi-faith state.

The building is architecturally striking — a modern structure with a large auditorium and distinctive copper-coloured dome. Visitors are generally welcome to look around outside services; the grounds are well-maintained and give a good view of the church's scale. Inside, the main sanctuary seats several thousand and is used for major state occasions and national religious events. Worth a brief stop if you're already in the Central District.

A story
The National Christian Centre was built to balance the National Mosque nearby — both were constructed as deliberate symbols of Nigeria's religious plurality in a capital designed from scratch as a neutral site for a divided nation. The architectural pairing was intentional policy, even if the two communities have not always shared the road between them peacefully.
