Asaba Main Market

Asaba Main Market is the commercial heart of the city — a dense maze of stalls covering several blocks near the town centre, selling everything from fresh produce and dried fish to fabrics, electronics, spare parts, and household goods. It is loud, colourful, and efficient in its own way. The food sections — yam, cassava, plantain, dried crayfish, palm oil — give the best sense of what people actually eat in the Delta.

The market is busiest in the morning and early afternoon. For travellers, it is primarily of interest for the spectacle and for picking up local textiles and crafts, which are available at significantly lower prices than in Lagos or Abuja. Some vendors are aggressive with pricing for obvious non-locals; a little patience and some willingness to walk away generally produces fair results.

A story
The main market at Asaba is one of the major trading points between western and eastern Nigeria — positioned at the bridge crossing, it has functioned as a commercial hub since long before the bridge existed, when the ferry crossing made Asaba a natural stopping point for goods moving across the river.
