When to Go

The dry season (November to March) is the most comfortable time to visit, avoiding the heavy rains that peak from June to September.

Asaba has a rich calendar of traditional festivals. Ulo, held every two years in July, is a cleansing ceremony to drive out evil spirits and misfortune. Aja ("sacrifice") takes place annually in August to mark the beginning of the harvest. Iwaji in September celebrates the new yam harvest. Ine (or Ekwensu) is a five-day celebration with one day for each of Asaba's five villages, featuring military-style parades and war dances. Oli Oma closes the harvest season with family sacrifices honoring deceased mothers.
