Okomu National Park protects one of the remaining blocks of lowland rainforest in southwestern Nigeria. It is much wilder and more serious than Benin City's urban parks, with forest trails, birdlife, monkeys, and the possibility, never a guarantee, of seeing signs of rarer animals such as forest elephants.
The park is a day trip rather than a casual city sight, and you should arrange transport and local guidance before setting out. Its value is ecological as much as scenic: after the bronzes, palaces, and markets of Benin City, Okomu shows the older forest landscape that once covered much more of this part of Edo State.
