The palace of the Emir of Ilorin is the centre of traditional authority in the city and in Kwara State. The current structure is a substantial compound in the city centre, with an imposing gatehouse and a large inner courtyard. It remains the seat of the emirate, which continues to exercise significant ceremonial and moral authority in the community.
Visitors can view the exterior of the palace and the gate area. During major Islamic festivals, particularly Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, the palace becomes the focus of elaborate processions and celebrations — the Durbar, a horseback procession of emirate officials in traditional dress, is one of the most visually spectacular events in the region.
