The Bonny Waterside is the historic heart of Port Harcourt — the stretch of riverfront where the city began as a colonial deep-water port in 1913. The area retains an older character than most of the city, with some early twentieth-century warehouses and the remnants of the original dock infrastructure still visible along the waterfront. The broad sweep of the Bonny River here is impressive: wide, brown, and busy with small boats.
Walking along the waterside in the early morning, when traders are unloading canoes from delta communities and the light is soft on the water, is one of the more atmospheric things you can do in Port Harcourt. The market activity around the waterfront gives you a direct sense of how much of the city's food still arrives by boat from the surrounding creeks. Ferry services to Okrika, Buguma, and Bonny Island depart from here.
