Shopping in Port Harcourt

Port Harcourt's shopping divides between the traditional open-air markets and the newer malls and supermarkets that have appeared as the city's middle class has grown. For visitors interested in Nigerian goods — fabrics, crafts, food — the markets are where to go.

Mile 1 Market is the city's largest and most comprehensive traditional market, spread across the city centre. It is intense and crowded but unbeatable for Ankara prints, traditional dress, spices, and fresh produce. Mile 3 Market nearby is smaller but less congested and has a good mix of food and household goods. Oil Mill Market in the northern part of the city serves the Rumuokoro area and is less overwhelming for those new to Nigerian market shopping.

For a more controlled shopping experience, Aba Road and Rumuola Road have a string of supermarkets, electronics shops, and clothing retailers. Park N Shop, Choice Supermarket, and De Giant Supermarket are useful for provisions, imported goods, and anything you need but cannot find at the markets.
