Corpus Christi Cathedral

Corpus Christi Cathedral is the principal Catholic church of Port Harcourt and one of the oldest religious buildings in the city. It stands in the D-line area and is a landmark of colonial-era ecclesiastical architecture in Rivers State. The building has been expanded and renovated over the decades but retains its original form and remains an active parish church.

The cathedral is worth visiting for the contrast it offers to the surrounding urban density — the grounds are relatively quiet and the interior is cool and spacious. Sunday masses draw large, well-dressed congregations and are a window into Nigerian Catholic life, which tends to be exuberant and musically rich. The cathedral is open throughout the week for those who simply want to look inside.
