Isaac Boro Park

Isaac Boro Park is one of Port Harcourt's most pleasant public spaces, a well-maintained green area in the Old GRA neighbourhood that provides shade and breathing room from the surrounding streets. The park is named after the Ijaw activist and soldier Isaac Adaka Boro, a significant figure in the history of Niger Delta resistance politics.

The grounds feature walking paths, benches, and mature trees that offer genuine shade. It is a favourite with early morning joggers and an informal meeting point for residents of the Old GRA. The surrounding Old GRA neighbourhood itself is worth exploring on foot — it retains more of Port Harcourt's colonial-era layout than most parts of the city, with wider roads and older architectural stock.

A story
The park is named after Isaac Adaka Boro, who in 1966 led the twelve-day Niger Delta Republic uprising — an armed attempt to establish an independent state for the Ijaw people. He was captured, tried for treason, and sentenced to death, though he was later pardoned and died fighting for Nigeria in the Biafra War. The park's name keeps his memory alive in the city he sought to liberate.
