Port Harcourt Zoo

Port Harcourt Zoo, known locally as PH Zoo, is a state-run zoological park that sits in the Rumuola area of the city. The grounds are spacious by West African standards, with enclosures for primates, big cats, crocodiles, and various bird species native to the Niger Delta region. It is one of the few places in Rivers State where you can see forest wildlife up close without venturing into the delta.

The zoo is more than just an animal park — it also functions as a small botanical garden, and the shaded pathways make it a pleasant escape from Port Harcourt's heat and traffic. Entry is affordable and it is popular with local families at weekends. Go early in the morning when the animals are most active and the grounds have not yet filled up.

A story
The zoo was established during the colonial era and has gone through several overhauls since independence. Among its most unusual residents is a collection of chimpanzees rescued from bushmeat traders — the zoo works with conservation groups to rehabilitate animals that have been seized from illegal wildlife markets across the Niger Delta.
