Mile 1 Market

Mile 1 Market is Port Harcourt's largest and most chaotic traditional market, sprawling across several blocks in the heart of the city. It is named after its distance from the old colonial waterfront — one mile from the Bonny Waterside — and has been the city's commercial hub since the early twentieth century. Everything is sold here: fresh food, dried fish, spices, fabrics, electronics, phone accessories, hardware, and traditional medicines.

Shopping at Mile 1 is an experience in itself, though not always a comfortable one. The market is dense, loud, and relentlessly busy, particularly on weekday mornings. Pickpocketing can be a problem, so carry minimal cash and keep phones out of sight. The fabrics section is worth the effort — you can find excellent Ankara prints and adire cloth at prices far below what boutiques charge. The food section is also a good place to buy palm oil, smoked fish, and fresh produce directly from traders who bring it in from the delta communities.
