The University of Rwanda's Huye campus grew from the former National University of Rwanda, long the country's leading academic institution. It is not a formal tourist attraction, but it explains Butare's reputation as Rwanda's intellectual city.
Walk the public edges of the campus and you will feel the difference from a purely administrative town: students, bookshops, photocopy stalls, and cafes give Huye a thoughtful, youthful pace. Be respectful of classrooms and offices; this is a working university, not a museum.
