Butare sits on Rwanda's main southern road, with frequent buses and minibuses from Kigali via Muhanga. The trip usually takes three to four hours depending on traffic and stops.
From Butare, buses and shared transport continue toward Nyamagabe, Nyungwe National Park, and the western border around Cyangugu. Roads are paved, but the hills make journeys slower than the map suggests.
