Rwanda is small enough that most destinations can be reached in a day's drive from Kigali. The road network is genuinely good by African standards, and improving steadily.
Buses and minibuses
The cheapest way to travel between towns is by shared minibus. The main intercity bus station in Kigali is at Nyabugogo. Operators like Rwanda Interlink and Onatracom run regular services to Musanze (for Volcanoes National Park), Huye (Butare), Gisenyi (Rubavu), and elsewhere. Departures are frequent and fares are low. Buses in Kigali use a Tap&Go smartcard system.
Motorbike taxis (motos)
The defining local transport experience. Motorbike taxis wait at designated stages throughout the country, identifiable by their coloured vests. Agree on the fare before getting on — typically 200–1,000 Rwandan francs for a short trip. In Kigali you can also use the Yego Moto app to hail one without negotiating. Motos are convenient but fast; helmets are supplied, wear one.
Car hire
Car hire is available in Kigali and gives you flexibility for national park trips and more remote areas. A 4WD is strongly recommended for Volcanoes National Park and anywhere outside major paved roads. Prices are on the high side; hiring with a driver is common and often the more practical option.
Getting to the national parks
- Volcanoes National Park: 2.5 hours from Kigali; public bus to Musanze then shared transport or taxi.
- Nyungwe National Park: 5–6 hours from Kigali on a good paved road; best reached by private vehicle or prearranged tour.
- Akagera National Park: 2.5 hours from Kigali heading east; the main gate is at Kayonza.
