One of the most disturbing of Rwanda's genocide memorials. At Murambi, a hilltop technical school near Gikongoro, tens of thousands of Tutsi sought refuge in April 1994 after being told by local authorities they would be protected. They were massacred over two days. The bodies have been exhumed from mass graves, preserved, and placed in the classrooms where the killings took place.
It is an extraordinarily confronting visit. The site is deliberately unmediated — the preservation is intended as proof and as a declaration that this cannot be forgotten. A guide is available and a visitors' book with a donation box is at the entrance.
To reach Murambi, take the road towards Gikongoro from Butare. The memorial is signposted a few kilometres before town; locals will point the way.
