Our Lady of Conception Church

The Church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição stands on Conceição Avenue, a short walk from the waterfront, and is one of the older colonial churches in the capital. The building is less grand than the cathedral but has been well-preserved, with a simple rendered facade and a small forecourt shaded by mature trees. Services are held regularly, and the church serves the surrounding residential neighbourhood.

The area around the church gives a quieter, more residential side of São Tomé town — away from the main commercial streets and the port, you get a better sense of the small-city rhythms: children playing, neighbours on stoops, the smell of cooking fish. Worth walking through on the way between the cathedral and the waterfront.
