The most famous beach on the peninsula and the picture-postcard image of Sierra Leone's coast. River No. 2 is a long arc of white sand where a freshwater river runs into the Atlantic, hemmed in by forested hills. Swimming is excellent on both the sea and the river, and the calm conditions make it a good first stop with children.
The community-run development association manages a row of simple beach lodges and restaurants behind the dunes, where grilled fish and palm wine are reliable orders. Day visitors are welcome; pay a small fee at the gate and the rest of the beach is essentially empty.
