Sierra Leone

Small West African country of Atlantic beaches, rainforest islands, Krio culture, and a complicated history.

Sierra Leone is one of West Africa's most overlooked destinations — a small country with stunning beaches, dense rainforest, warm people, and a complicated history it's still working through. The civil war that ravaged the country through the 1990s ended in 2002. Two decades on, Sierra Leone is at peace and slowly building its tourist infrastructure, though it remains raw, underdeveloped, and genuinely off the beaten path.

The country sits on the Atlantic coast between Guinea and Liberia. Freetown, the capital, sprawls across a hilly peninsula and is home to most of the country's hotels, restaurants, and services. The Freetown Peninsula itself has some of the best beaches in West Africa — long, uncrowded stretches of white sand backed by forest. Further east, Tiwai Island offers some of Africa's finest primate-watching; in 2025 it was inscribed as Sierra Leone's first UNESCO World Heritage Site alongside the Gola Forest.

Traveling here takes patience. Roads are rough, the rainy season makes many routes impassable, and infrastructure is limited outside the capital. But Sierra Leoneans are genuinely welcoming, the scenery is beautiful, and you'll rarely share it with other tourists.
