The Tongo diamond fields lie about 30 km north of Kenema and were once among the most productive artisanal diamond mining areas in West Africa. Today the fields are still actively mined, mostly by small-scale diggers working alluvial gravel pits. Visiting requires local guidance and permission from the mining authorities.
The landscape of active diamond mining — red laterite soils, shallow pits, water pumps, and crowds of diggers — is unlike anything else in the region. It's not a comfortable tourist attraction, but it provides a direct look at the extractive economy that has shaped this part of Sierra Leone for nearly a century. Arrange visits through Kenema contacts rather than showing up independently.
