Bossaso Beach

The Gulf of Aden coastline around Bossaso offers stretches of relatively undeveloped beach with clear water and good visibility. The beaches east of the port are the most accessible, reachable by vehicle on a dirt road running along the coastal flat. The water is warm year-round and the seabed is sandy near shore, though the coast becomes rockier further east.

The best time for swimming is October to March, when the northeast monsoon keeps the sea calm and the coastal air is cooler. During the summer khareef season (June to September), winds pick up and the sea can be rough. Facilities are essentially nonexistent — bring everything you need. Local advice on current conditions and safety in specific locations is essential before visiting.

A story
The beaches east of Bossaso are made of white sand backed by rocky headlands, with the Gulf of Aden's famously clear water — calm in the winter months when the northeast monsoon blows offshore. The coastline here was used for centuries by Somali fishermen and traders who navigated to Arabia and back by reading the monsoon winds.
