Dhuusamarreeb Market

The market is the visible heart of Dhuusamarreeb — a row of single-storey shops and stalls along the main road through town, with traders coming in from surrounding nomadic settlements to sell goats, camels, milk, and dried meat. There are also stalls of imported tea, sugar, flour, and the usual plastic kitchenware ferried up the road from Mogadishu.

Like every small-town Somali market, it doubles as a social space — men gathered in the shade chewing khat, children running between stalls, the air heavy with diesel and dust. It is not a tourist sight in any conventional sense; the only reason to seek it out is to understand the rhythm of life in central Somalia, and only if local conditions allow.
