Dhuusamarreeb

Central Somali state capital in Galmudug, a semi-arid interior stop between Mogadishu and Garowe

Dhuusamarreeb (also spelled Dusa Mareb) is the capital of the Galmudug federal state in central Somalia. It sits in the semi-arid interior, roughly midway between Mogadishu and Garowe. The town has been a contested flashpoint in clan conflicts and al-Shabaab activity, and the federal government has struggled to maintain control of the surrounding Galguduud region.

It is primarily a stopping point on the road between north and south, with a small market and basic facilities. There is nothing to bring a traveler here specifically, and the security situation in the surrounding area is poor.

Guide

Getting There

Dhuusamarreeb has a small airport with intermittent domestic flights — when they run, they connect to Mogadishu and Galkayo. Schedules are unpredictable, security checks heavy, and operators come and go. Most arrivals are by road, on the long inland route between Mogadishu and Garowe, which passes through territory periodically held by al-Shabaab.

Independent overland travel is strongly discouraged. The few foreigners who reach Dhuusamarreeb usually do so as part of UN, NGO, or diplomatic missions, with armed escort and pre-arranged convoys.

Things to Do

There is essentially nothing in Dhuusamarreeb that would justify a journey on its own. The town is a small administrative centre in the dry interior, set among low scrub and occasional acacia, with a market, a few mosques, and a scatter of government buildings since it was chosen as capital of Galmudug state. The surrounding region has been the scene of repeated fighting between federal forces, clan militias, and al-Shabaab.

Anyone who does end up here will find the usual rhythms of a small Somali town: tea shops along the main street, camel and goat trading at the market, and a steady traffic of dusty pickups heading north and south on the inland highway. Travel is unsafe without serious local advice — most foreigners passing through do so with a security escort.
