Galkayo is most safely reached by air. Jubba Airways, African Express Airways, and other carriers operate from Mogadishu (about 90 minutes) and Bosasso in Puntland. Book seats in advance — schedules are irregular and flights fill up quickly with traders, NGO staff, and diaspora travellers.
Overland travel to Galkayo is possible but involves traversing areas with active clan conflict and banditry risks. The road from Mogadishu passes through the Mudug region and requires experienced local guidance and security arrangements. Travel from Bosasso to the north is somewhat less problematic but still requires caution.
For any visitor to Galkayo, registering with your country's embassy (most likely in Nairobi or Addis Ababa) and arranging local contacts before arrival is strongly recommended. The security situation can change rapidly.
