Amanzimtoti River Mouth

Estuary at the southern end of the main beach, popular with fishermen

The Amanzimtoti River reaches the sea at the southern end of the main beach. The estuary is shallow and seasonal — closed by sandbars for parts of the year, open and tidal at others — and is a favourite spot for fishermen casting for kob, grunter, and salmon. Wading birds work the mudflats at low tide.

There is a wooden footbridge across the river mouth and a paved walking path along the riverbank that connects up with the Ilanda Wilds reserve further inland. A pleasant evening walk; bring mosquito repellent in summer.

A story
The town's name comes from the Zulu phrase 'amanzi amtoti' — 'sweet water'. The story is that the warrior king Shaka tasted the river's water during a campaign south and gave the place its enduring name.
