Morningside, on the lower slopes of the Berea ridge, is the closest Durban has to a hip inner-city neighbourhood. The spine is Florida Road, a tree-lined avenue of restored Victorian houses now converted to restaurants, bars, gelato shops and small fashion boutiques — the city's best concentration of eating and drinking.
By day Morningside is calm, leafy and walkable. By night Florida Road fills up with a cross-section of Durban, from students to the moneyed suburbs. It is one of the few parts of central Durban where you can safely walk the streets after dark, and the obvious base for visitors who do not want to stay on the beachfront.
