Dutch Reformed Church

The town's landmark Cape Dutch church, dating from 1847, with a distinctive white-gabled facade at the head of Huguenot Road

Address Huguenot Road, Franschhoek 7690

The Dutch Reformed Church stands at the top of Huguenot Road, its white-gabled facade visible from most of the town and marking the visual centre of Franschhoek. The church is a handsome example of Cape Dutch ecclesiastical architecture — clean lines, thick walls, and a symmetrical gabled front — dating from 1847, though the congregation occupying it is far older.

The church is an active place of worship and is open to visitors during the day. The interior is simple and uncluttered; the stained glass windows are the main decorative element. The churchyard contains graves from the colonial period, including some of the earliest families in the valley.

From the steps of the church, looking back down Huguenot Road toward the mountains, you get one of the classic Franschhoek views: the avenue of plane trees, the wine estates on either side, and the Franschhoek mountains closing off the valley. The drive here is good; this vantage point is even better.

A story
The congregation here is one of the oldest in South Africa — services have been held on this site since 1691, just three years after the first Huguenots arrived. The current building replaced an earlier structure in 1847, but the community it serves has been continuous for over three hundred years.
