George is exceptionally well positioned for day trips in multiple directions. North over the mountains lies Oudtshoorn and the Cango Caves in the Klein Karoo — a full day but entirely feasible. The fastest way over is the modern Outeniqua Pass, but the older and far quieter Montagu Pass, a hand-built 1847 gravel route through indigenous forest, makes a rewarding outing in its own right; drive up one and back over the other for the contrast.
East along the N2 opens up Wilderness, Sedgefield, Knysna, and the Tsitsikamma section of the Garden Route National Park; any of these can be visited in a day from George. The Wilderness area in particular rewards a slower visit: the Touw River, the estuary lakes, and the forest trails behind the beach are easy to explore independently.
The Outeniqua Mountains directly behind George are intersected by several hiking trails. The Outeniqua Trail is a multi-day route, but day sections are accessible; the Baard's Kloof trail is a popular shorter option with good forest and fynbos and a waterfall.
