Kaaimans River Bridge

A historic steel railway bridge over the Kaaimans River gorge, about halfway between George and Wilderness on the Garden Route. The bridge carried the Outeniqua Choo-Tjoe steam train on what was one of the most scenic rail sections in South Africa. The train no longer runs but the bridge is preserved; the best views are from the N2 lookout or from the beach at Wilderness.

A story
The Kaaimans River rail bridge is one of the most photographed structures on the Garden Route. The single-span steel arch carries the old Garden Route railway across a deep tidal gorge where the Kaaimans River meets the sea — when the Outeniqua Choo-Tjoe steam train crossed it, the combination of steam, steel, and ocean was the defining image of the route. The bridge still stands and can be viewed from a lookout point on the N2, or from the beach at Wilderness to the east on a clear day.
