Outeniqua Transport Museum

A railway museum at George's historic station, housing the rolling stock and memorabilia of the legendary Outeniqua Choo-Tjoe steam train. The collection includes working locomotives, restored carriages, and an extensive photographic archive of the coastal route to Knysna. Worth visiting both for the machinery and for the context it provides on the Garden Route's history.

A story
The museum exists because of a steam train that no longer runs. The Outeniqua Choo-Tjoe made one of the most scenic rail journeys in South Africa, hugging the coast between George and Knysna through coastal forest and across the Kaaimans River bridge — a single-span steel arch over a tidal lagoon that photographers have been shooting for decades. The route was suspended after flood damage in 2006 and has never fully reopened. The museum houses the surviving locomotives, carriages, and memorabilia from what was once one of the last regular steam rail services in the southern hemisphere.
