Mitchell's is one of South Africa's oldest craft breweries, founded in Knysna in 1983. They were making real beer while the big commercial breweries still dominated South Africa, and the brewery has grown into a proper institution. Their Bosun's Bitter and Raven Stout are the standards worth trying; seasonal and special releases appear throughout the year.
The brewery has a tap room on the main road where you can taste the range and buy bottles to take away. Tours of the brewing facility are available and give a straightforward look at how small-batch craft beer is made. Combining Mitchell's with a plate of Knysna oysters at the adjacent restaurant is something of a local tradition.
