The Anglican cathedral stands in the middle of Grahamstown and gives the city its old colonial silhouette. Its spire, stonework, memorials, and central position make it the natural first stop for understanding the town's British-settler layer.
Read the building critically. It is beautiful, but it also sits inside the harder history of the Xhosa frontier wars and the way those wars were remembered.
